These can be short reports, a letter, a story — or pick one that works for your school environment. All it takes to unpack this alternative is to remind students to follow good keyboarding habits while doing their normal classroom projects.”

Finding, planning, and executing teaching strategies to engage our students is one of the things teachers have struggled with since the beginning of education. But nowadays, students are even more distracted than ever, with a full armada of technological devices at the ready to keep kids from learning even more.

But there are some teaching strategies you can use to help you overcome the struggles of student engagement in your classroom. These are written by Janelle Cox, who is a longtime elementary educator based on the East Coast. Janelle’s ideas include:

Janelle sums up her article like this, in a paragraph entitled, “Educate Students on Their Well-Being”: “Digital distractions aren’t the only thing to blame on lack of student engagement. Poor nutrition and lack of sleep are to blame as well. Many students’ diets, or lack thereof, can lead to a poor attention span and performance in school. A child’s lack of sleep can also contribute to them giving their full potential in school. If a student is tired and hungry, how can we expect them to be engaged in our lessons? This is when we need to educate our students on proper sleep and nutrition and overall healthy well-being. Encourage students to eat healthy meals and go to bed at reasonable hour. Tell them to unplug from their digital devices at least an hour before bedtime and to not have a television in their room. Remind students that being fit, getting enough sleep, and eating right play an important role in their academic success at school.”

Classroom Management Using Exit Slips

Exit slips can be a great, informal classroom management technique to measure what students have learned. It’s the last thing students do before heading home, and can be used by educators to plan accordingly for future lesson plans.

Today on TeachHUB.com, frequent contributing writer Jordan Catapano, who is a veteran high school English teacher based in the Chicago suburbs, looks at exit slips and how to carry them out. Here’s his take on using a favorite ed-tech tool to formulate exit slips: “My favorite way of collecting information from students is using Google Forms, mostly because Google has features that help synthesize the data collected. I can look at overall classroom trends or student-by-student information, all automatically organized by the form. Another way I’ve enjoyed having students respond is by asking them to share a series of discussion forum posts talking about their learning. Or instead of using a digital tool, it might be just as simple to use an actual slip of paper where students can answer brief questions related to the day’s lesson.”

Jordan sums up his article like this: “Overall, build exit slips into your routine as a time of reflection. Reflection for you on how well you conducted instructional time, and reflection for students on how well they understood the objectives of today’s lesson. The typical school day can feel very much like a business-as-usual routine where we go through the motions of education … but are students actually learning?”

There are many ways to assess student learning and growth, but exit slips are one easy step towards thinking through if we’ve actually made the most of our time together.
